People often ask how can I do a backup of my hard drive? With PC Backup Software it is easy to make and keep making backups of your hard drive.
If you have any problems with communicating with other computers in the network, disable all software firewalls and try it, if it works while the software firewall is disabled, then you will need to configure the software firewall to allow share folders. We recommend you use a hardware firewall instead of software firewalls anyway. The external hardware firewalls are generally much faster! You may already have the hardware firewall such as a Linksys Router. If you need to keep the software firewall, then follow the venders instructions to allow shared folders to work!
Viruses, Worms, Spyware, and bad software, alone create the need for having a copy of your software you can restore from. Add to that, the laws of physics. Hardware wears out and quits working. Depending on how much you actually use your PC, most of us can expect to get about a year or two out of our hard drives before they fail. Failure of mechanical devices is "when" not "if".
My favorite line of all time from hard drive failures. Jim, I only previewed the page, I did not download anything. Let me just say one thing to be clear, if you can see it, you have already downloaded it. You may not have clicked any keys, but you can not see anything on your PC without downloading it first. A classic gotcha' here is Outlook. If you preview from your preview plane, you are downloading every web page in your in-box!
The bottom line here is "have a backup". You can re-create, your word documents, emails, address book, spreadsheets and such, but having a backup can take years off the time it takes to rebuild everything.
PC Backup does take some of the worry about data integrity out. We cannot stop your next hard drive failure, but PC Backup is a very low cost method of keeping your backup current.
PC Backup is a pretty easy method of backing up your PC data (files).
PC Backup creates batch files for xcopy. Xcopy is already a part of your windows machine. You backup to another PC, USB Hard Drive, or to a folder setup in a server. Or if there is no other place to copy software, a backup copy of files on your own hard drive is better than no backup at all. Keep in mind most of the files I have restored to PCs, are because of bad hard drives.
PC Backup and Xcopy makes a copy of each file on the backup location. These files may be used from the backup location without running a restore. Most backup programs to include Microsoft Windows backup, require you to "restore" the files before you can use them.
Anyone can sell a backup program, but how easy you can restore your files is the first question you should ask yourself. Any backup program is better than none at all. But you should restore a file just for fun to see what I mean. If you take one of your own files and try to restore it from a backup, even if you used a very fast removable hard drive for the backup media, and still used Microsoft Windows Backup, you will be hours going through files looking for the file in question. PC Backup makes a copy of the entire folder tree! For Example: You want to restore a file call "Customer address.xls". If you use PC Backup, the machine name for the backup is "darnPC" and the shared folder is called "backup" PC backup will create the tree on \\darnPC\backup\jim.oconnor\c\ (it will actually use your profile from your PC not jim.oconnor, you will go to the shared folder, under each person's profile that is using this location for a backup, you will see \\darnPC\backup\jim.oconnor\c\documents and settings\my documents\Customer address.xls. So if you want to restore it back to your PC, just copy and paste it back. This can support a business or your house.
All of the files backed up from c: drive will be on the c folder on the backup machine. All of the letters for the hard drive are the same, so if you have a hard drive called z:" drive, your files will go to the backup machine on the folder called z. For example you have a photo call d:\My Pictures\picture1.jpg, and your log in name is "joe", your PC Backup Server name is "occcsa", and you have a share called "pcbackups", your file will actually go to \\occcsa\pcbackups\joe\d\My Pictures\picture1.jpg.
Again, we want to talk about the actual ability to restore a single file or your entire PC. If you have to restore your files on a new PC, your backup media (such as tapes) better be exactly the same for most situations. To keep the media the same can be costly. PC Backup does not care. A file is a file.
PC Backups will not backup files that are in use, so we recommend you have it start at boot up, this means that any files that have changed since yesterday will be copied to the backup location.
If you wish to copy the Microsoft Outlook.pst file as part of the backup, make sure the Local Settings folder is unhidden. Example: C:\Documents and Settings\jim.oconnor\Local Settings
The default settings for PC Backup is to copy the Outlook .pst file (this is where many people keep there mailbox information), and everything on the "Documents and Settings" folder for the given user. You may add as many entire folders or individual files as you wish. By default, PC Backup will only copy files that have changed since the last time you ran it. You may click a single button to do a total backup. To see what you have running in startup right now, click start, programs, startup, you will see a list a files that are set to start every time you log in. To add PC Backup to this list, create a shortcut to PC Backups and put it in C:\Documents and Settings\jim.oconnor\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. After you have used PC Backup a couple of times you will see it still takes a couple of minutes to run, but better a couple of minutes everyday than an hour once a week. If your PC does fail, the files that can be put back on it are only going to be as current as the last backup you did. A couple of minutes everyday now does not seem so long.
After you start the application, you can see a ten second countdown! During the ten second countdown you can hit a button to stop the timer. Let this timer go to allow the backup to work.
You may browse around to decide what folders or files need to be backed up. Once you have this set up you can close the window. The information is automatically saved in its configuration files.
You should create a share (create a folder and share it) on one machine in the network for your PC Backups to go on to. You do not need to identify your profile, you only need to select a machine to store the backups on and the share that PC Backup will use.
We recommend you have this start at startup. We suggest you have it in the start up menu. If it is here it will backup anything that has changed since the last time you logged in. The first time you run this it can take a long time depending on the speed of your PC, Network, and Machine you are sending this to. After the first time, this generally runs in a couple of minutes.
For our fellow IT folks. All of the same rules for archive bit still apply here. If you change a document for example, you will set the archive bit. If the archive bit is changed, it will be copied to the backup location and the archive bit will be reset.
